Why Men Cheat

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

By Gregory Lions “Big, little or short or tall, Wish I could have kept ‘em all, I loved ‘em every one” - T.G. Sheperd, I Loved ‘Em Every One I thumbed through the New York City Yellow pages under “Escort Services”. There were twenty-five pages! “Escort” is just the way businesses get around saying “prostitutes”. Clearly, the world’s oldest profession is alive and well here in the Big Apple. I even feel I can safely say that not all the men who patronize these services are single. Cheat is a silly word It’s culturally centered. It implies that we’ve violated the rules of the game of fidelity. First off, take a look at the current divorce rate: 1 out of every 2 marriages fails. Why? Marital infidelity is the biggest reason. There are other cultures that openly allow a man to have more than one wife; the Muslims. One of the richest men on the planet today, The Sultan of Brunei has 100 wives! Right here in the United States, polygamy is openly practiced in Utah. We exist as human beings on two levels; with bodies and minds. We attempt to enforce a set of Puritanical moral codes that contradict our physical desires. This is just another of the many ridiculous hypocrisies people try to impose upon themselves and others. If we would only be honest with ourselves, then we’d acknowledge the fact that we are sexually attracted to more than one individual. This is not a violation of any love promise made to one woman, it’s just instinct, that pre-loaded software package in our brains. On the purely physical plane, we have instinct and hormones constantly influencing our thoughts. This combination comes into play when a man sees an attractive woman walking by. She stimulates his senses. He doesn’t know what she’s thinking he only sees her physical attributes. They make him feel good. He has fantasies of what it would be like to kiss her, to feel her body against his; to make love to her. Seconds after, a second thought, guilt, may come barging in. “I’m a married man” or “I’ve got a girlfriend” or “How could I betray her like that?” It’s absurd that a man should feel guilt for something over which he has no control. Let’s not forget movies, television and printed media. James Bond, the ultimate womanizer, immediately comes to mind. What about these soap operas that millions of women sit glued to their televisions watching? The appeal of most of them is in watching the main characters have affairs. Now there’s a show on Fox called “Temptation Island”(which should really be called “Sexual Survivor”) where young couples are placed on an island. The men and women are separated to opposite sides inhabited by horny singles whose sole mission is to seduce these committed people. The ratings for this show have been phenomenal! And how about that riveting drama in the tabloids as well as mainstream newspapers that unfolded in the White House a few years ago? You remember, Bill Clinton and “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky” Monica Lewinsky? With the advent of the Internet, a whole new definition of cheating exists: Computer love affairs, the infidelity of your text. Men can cyber with women and vice versa. Here is where the distinction must be drawn. Physical performance vs. emotional betrayal. Which do you think is more important? A man can patronize a hooker, and once he’s completed the sexual act she becomes just a vague memory. He doesn’t want to grow old with her. This is a very important point since men and women have fought, marriages have crumbled, and so much emotional agony are left in its wake. The bottom line, is that men are and will continue to be attracted to other women and yes, women have and will continue to be attracted to other men too. When we can accept the reality, then maybe we’ll have become more mature as a society. Parents: Take the SAT Challenge!

Monday, July 30th, 2007

By Jacqueline Byrne I keep a box of tissues on the table where I tutor because, as an SAT tutor and college application consultant, I listen to high school juniors and seniors who are so overwhelmed by college pressure that they begin to cry. Not just girls. Not just Ivy League aspirants. High school students are always convinced their parents dont understand them. This time the students are right. Parents dont understand because the college admission process is so much more competitive than it was when most parents applied to college. These are the ten things I wish I could tell parents: 1. I am convinced that parents have to walk a mile in the students moccasins to gain some appreciation for the stress the students are under and to reverse the tension at home. If parents will take an SAT practice test they will feel some of the same anxiety, cringe at their results, and discover that the test is hard. Instead of piling 25 pounds of SAT study books on the desk, parents can commiserate with students over missed problems. Parents and students can become allies rather than adversaries as they face the college admission process. 2. Hire SAT prep tutors who focus on the applicable academic material rather than just the tricks. Increasing a students academic preparation for the test in addition to teaching the tricks increases their confidence on the test and in the classroom; teaching only the tricks makes students more insecure because they are relying on tricks rather than on actual knowledge. 3. Have the tutors keep the parents informed about each session so that the parent tracks progress with the tutor rather than pestering the student for information. 4. Have the student try the ACT. All colleges accept it and some students do better on it than on the SAT. 5. Make learning fun. For example, have the students memorize vocabulary using the book Vocabulary Cartoons by Sam Burchers, et al. Also, have the student do the crossword and other word puzzles in SAT Vocabulary Express, the fun book of word puzzles that will increase SAT scores. I wrote it with Michael Ashley, a nationally known puzzler, so that our students would learn to play with words, an important skill for the new SAT. 6. Emphasize getting good grades rather than good SAT scores. Bs in honors classes are better than As in regular classes. 7. Hire an independent college counselor who will work with the family to create a realistic college list, brainstorm for essay topics, establish deadlines for the student, and check all college applications. High school college counselors are overworked and do not have the time to walk families through the process. 8. Realize that the schools parents attended may not be within reach for their child. The number of high school students planning to attend college has increased dramatically; the student may be well qualified for a particular college and may still not get in. 9. Look for colleges where the student will thrive academically and socially. Choosing colleges based on their name recognition and prestige value is a formula that will increase stress, not decrease it. Everyone else wants to go to those schools, too, making them even harder to get into; they are not necessarily the best place for the student. Loren Popes book, Colleges That Change Lives, is a good place to start. 10. Support your child through a difficult process. Leave the prodding, nagging, and yelling to the tutors and college counselor. The independent college counselor will tell the student to work harder so the parent doesnt have to. Why ruin the students last year at home? Parents can make decisions so that senior year is not be so fraught with anxiety that family members begin to avoid each other. And, I hate it when my students cry. Due to the competition in the market at present one can find himself better placed to avail an unsecured loan than in the past. You just need to find out the best lender for you as there are many in the market. Another good thing is that now these loans are available at a much cheaper rate. Also the flexibility related with the low rate unsecured loan make them even more popular. You can borrow the money over a wide range, then there are lot of flexibility in repayments as well as interest rate. Low Rate Unsecured Loans: some important figures One can borrow anything around 1,000-25,000 depending upon the lender, personal repayment ability, past credit history etc. The interest rate can be of both kinds fixed as well as APR. You have to decide the better one for you. The typical rate is around 6.5% APR variable with most of the leading company offering low rate unsecured loan. The typical APR can vary as well with different lenders. However the interest rate range from 6.4% APR to 10.4% APR depending on the personal circumstances of the borrowers. Anyway it is always advisable to opt for a fixed interest rate as you will be in a better position to decide about your monthly budget. As with every loan there is repayment which is the most important part of loan, you have to be careful about the repayment mode and the tenure so that every thing fits well into your monthly budget. Repayment can be made over a period of 12 to 72 months. Repayment term also causes the interest rate to vary. You have to very judiciously find out the maximum amount that you can afford to pay monthly without making any defaults. Also it will be better to find out lenders who dont impose any penalty in case you wish to pay back your loan amount earlier that what you committed. Types of Unsecured Loans: Low rate unsecured loan can be of various kind. You can avail these loans for purchasing a car or repairing it, for buying a new house, for holiday purposes, for home improvement, last but not the least for debt consolidation. Low rate unsecured Loan: process of application The process of application is quite simple. You need to put up your quote on the internet and the loan application is forwarded to lenders offering these loans. You need to sign the form sent by the lenders and once the form is received by them, loan amount is credited into your personal account. If you need the loan urgently just let the lenders know about it and you have the loan amount available for you within few days. The entire process is this fast as there is no time wasted in verification and valuation of your collateral. One of the important requirements to avail low rate unsecured loan is your age and nationality. You must be citizen of U.K and must be of 18 years of age to qualify for these loans. Jobs And The Hidden Job Market

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

By Jay Bauder Another morning of job hunting lies ahead of you. You pour a cup of coffee and open the paper to the employment section. With a mixture of anticipation and desperation you pick up a stub of pencil and prepare to target and identify some possible job opportunities. There are less ads to circle this morning and despite the promising words and vague descriptions you have begun to believe that none of these potential employers will seriously consider you. Perhaps they have family or friends or maybe you’ll hear once again “I’m afraid you’re overqualified for this position”. After making a few phone calls you try to get into a positive frame of mind. You head out the door, a folder of resumes in one hand and a list of addresses at the next. You will drop off a few resumes and have plans for an interview this afternoon. Maybe today will be different… Are you or a friend looking for work? Have you heard of acquaintances laid off from long-term employment only to find four or five months later that they are still unable to find a job? If you think the only way to find a job is to have connections, you may be partly right. With such a demand for employment many jobs never make it to the paper. How can you compete? NETWORKING “Leave no stone unturned”. Tell friends, family and acquaintances of your job search. These people can give you an ‘IN’ to their businesses when positions come available. They may also hear of someone who is hiring and keep you updated on opportunities you may not otherwise have heard about. Their personal referral can also make an impression on the employer in your behalf. NON-POSTED JOBS You don’t have to wait for a job to be listed in the paper, or even posted on the company board, to apply for work at a company. Go through the phone book and make a list of companies you’d like to work for. Call and ask if there are any positions available. Ask for the name of the human resources manager or the individual in charge of hiring for the area you are applying to. Send a resume and direct it to the person in charge of hiring. Write a cover letter that expresses your interest in the company and why you’d like to work for them. Follow up several days later and ask for the individual. Tell them you’re checking to see that they received your resume and ask if there are any positions that may become available. If they are not hiring suggest you’ll check back at another time. Often positions are made available unexpectedly and by keeping in contact (without pestering) you may be the first person that comes to mind. This is not a secret. If you’re not taking advantage, someone else will. You can’t afford to miss out on making yourself known to employers BEFORE the job posting is made public. Accessing this hidden job market may open up opportunities you never thought possible. By staying one step ahead of other job searchers you can be sure that your new job is just around the corner! Treating the Common Cold: A look at Alternative Medicine and Common Cold Treatment

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

By Patsy Hamilton Scientists and researchers continue to evaluate different methods of treating the common cold. There are thousands of published studies concerning alternative medicine and common cold prevention. More studies are published almost daily. One of the obstacles that researchers face is the fact that some people can be infected with a common cold virus and never have symptoms, some recover quickly without treatment and others have symptoms for as long as two weeks. The reason or reasons for these differences among people can not be fully explained. The average person has two or more colds per year. Children, typically have more. The cold is a leading reason for school absences and doctor visits. There are no effective prescription medications for treating the common cold. Antibiotics neither prevent nor kill viral infections. Although a cold is not a serious medical condition, it can cause lost days at work and school and can lead to bacterial infections of the sinuses, throat and respiratory system, so many researchers feel that studying the effects of vitamins, alternative medicine and common cold home remedies is a worthwhile effort. Treating the common cold with zinc nasal sprays or gels has been the subject of several studies and is somewhat controversial. Some scientists and researchers believe that applying zinc directly to nasal membranes can lead to a permanent loss of the sense of smell. In fact, one group of people sued a company, because they lost their sense of smell after using a zinc nasal spray. Zinc lozenges are also available and are not believed to have the side effects associated with the nasal spray, but they are only effective in reducing the duration of cold symptoms in about 50% of the people who use them. There have been numerous studies about vitamin C as an alternative medicine and common cold remedy. Some of these studies conclude that vitamin C can reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms. Others show that it is an effective preventative. Still others conclude that vitamin C is not effective for treating common cold symptoms or for preventing them. One study in Helsinki, Finland reported a 28% reduction in common cold frequency with vitamin E supplementation, but a follow-up study did not support the initial results. Vitamin E seems to prevent colds in some people, but is not effective for treating the common cold. These types of studies do not take into consideration the fact that some people do not seem to catch colds as easily as others. So results are not reliable. Even acupuncture has been studied as an alternative medicine and common cold remedy. Some researchers believe that acupuncture can be a reliable fever reducer. Echinacea is often recommended by herbalists as alternative medicine and common cold treatment. However, some researchers believe that Echinacea can be toxic to the liver when used for extended periods of time and so, should not be used as a preventative. Focusing on preventing, rather than treating common cold symptoms typically leads to immune system boosters. Andrographis paniculata is an herb that has been used in traditional medicine throughout Europe and Asia, both as a preventative and a treatment. Laboratory tests have shown that it has a very low toxicity, even in large amounts and is an effective alternative medicine and common cold remedy. All The Secrets You Need To Know About Wireless Cellular Phones

Monday, July 16th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dane_J_Stanton]Dane J Stanton As the modern age of cellular phones is upon us, we have some to recognize a simple fact and that is that wireless cellular phones are becoming a must for the average busy person. The fact of the matter is that many people are constantly using their cellular phones and they find it much more useful using a hands free set. The standard wireless cellular phone tend to come with the most modern, up-to-date technology there is and that of course is blue tooth. Blue tooth is essentially a wireless headset that people can stick behind their ears without having to worry about holding their phone to their ear during long conversations. In fact you can just leave your wireless cellular phone in your pocket the whole time. How great is that? There are many different brands and types of wireless cellular phones so we aren’t going to be able to get through every one this article. We have just decided to take a look at the most popular ones these days. Wireless Cellular Phone # 1: The LG-VX9800 This cell phone, although not as widely advertised as some of the other ones seen on the market today, does have a great deal going for it, especially if you communicate via text messaging on a regular basis. One of the major complaints that I have with even the best wireless cellular phone out there is that it is difficult to type a text message with the keyboard that also functions as your number keypad. The LG-VX9800 and its similar models help to solve that problem by providing the user with an easily accessible keyboard as part of the phone that mimics a normal keyboard, albeit in smaller size. Simply flip this wireless cellular phone open and have access to something that will truly let your fingers do the talking. Although it is a bit on the bulky size, this phone offered by Verizon Wireless is a great way to have the technology of the full QWERTY keyboards at your fingertips for a vast improvement on sending messages on every level. One drawback though is the price, which can range anywhere from $199.00 to $319.00 depending on the deal at the time. If youre looking for a wireless cellular phone that gives you the ability to compose text messages easily, this just might be the best choice for you. Phone # 2: Motorola SLVR L7 The next wireless cellular phone indicates just how vast the design market is when it comes to these little beauties. After the rampant success of the Motorola Razr, the company determined correctly that thing was in for some of its more trendy customers. It was easy to see that this phone was geared not towards the working informational technology expert like the wireless cellular phone mentioned above, but for the twenty-something personality who considered their phone to be a fashion accessory in one sense or another. The Motorola SLVRs main calling card is the fact that it is very thin, resembling an open Razr that has been pressed even thinner than previously thought. The features included in this wireless cellular phone are a VGA camera, as well as the ability to play and download iTunes. There are quite a few drawbacks, however to this particular type of wireless cellular phone. Perhaps because of its diminished size, the performance and features sometimes leave a bit to be desired. For instance, the included Bluetooth capability is confined to voice calls, and the speakerphone feature can only be activated after initializing the call. In addition, the Motorola SLVR V7 still doesnt allow reception of FM stations, which is a strange omission for a phone that gears itself as a music lovers phone. Inevitably there are going to be people who will find it unnecessary to purchase a wireless cellular phone, however for many people they are a must. The question you have to ask yourself is, how often am I going to be receiving phones and what is the likely duration of these calls going to be? Once you have figured this out, you’ll be able to make an informed decision. Good luck! Depressive Illness

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

By Michael Russell The richness of our language in synonyms for depression may be taken as an indication of its frequency. It is an emotional experience, though sometimes it is described as an ‘emptiness’ or ‘flatness’, seemingly a loss rather than a lowering of mood. Depression, like anxiety, is a universal experience and we regard it as abnormal only if it appears without reason or if it seems excessive in its degree or duration in relation to the cause. Not surprisingly, such a common feeling may be associated with any psychiatric syndrome; the depressive orders are those in which the depressed effect appears to be the primary phenomenon or at any rate one of the more prominent of the clinical features. Broadly, there are two depressive entities - endogenous depression, which is a variant of manic-depressive illness and neurotic depression. In practice, the differentiation between these two conditions is often difficult, but this is not surprising when we recall that any primary psychiatric disturbance may be associated with secondary or reactive features and of these, depression is one of the more common. To simplify matters this relationship suggests that in any individual case, the patient is regarded as having 40 per cent endogenous and 60 per cent reactive or neurotic depression. Forgetting the figures for a moment, it is the endogenous component that is important, for the remainder is a reaction to it. Successful treatment of endogenous depression is likely to lead to total recovery, whereas treatment directed only at the reactive component can hardly be more that partly successful. The term ‘atypical depression’ has been applied to some of these cases. It is only in the last 15 odd years that we have come to appreciate how common depressive illness is. It is estimated that in general practise one could expect that of every 1000 patients, 12 would present as new cases each year. Older figures, largely hospital derived and therefore making little allowance for milder cases, suggest that the incidence of endogenous depression alone is 1% in males and 2% in females. It would be unwise to suggest that depressive illness has become more common in the last 10 years; the much larger number of cases seen reflects the fact that we have learned to recognise its milder forms. When the diagnosis of depression is made, three interrelated decisions have to be made: can the patient be treated by a general practitioner or should the case be referred for specialist care, is hospital administration required or is the patient suicidal. The great majority of cases can be treated by a general practitioner and indeed their numbers are such that there is no alternative. Immediate referral to a consultant psychiatrist or even a psychiatric hospital is generally advisable if the patient has strong suicidal ideas or has made a suicide attempt. Severe agitation, obvious retardation, delusionary ideas of guilt or unworthiness and severe loss of weight are other indications. Failure to respond to adequate doses of one of the antidepressant drugs over a period of say three weeks also makes referral advisable.
