How to Write a Simple Job Description

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Philip Lye 1.0 A timely reminder In a recent decision in a New South Wales court it was found that an employee was psychologically injured and that contributing factors such as not having a job description and controlling management behaviours were responsible. The employee was subsequently awarded $500,000.00 for psychological injury. Not having a clear job description can lead to significant expense, declining morale and uncertainty. In this is the case, you the employer is the party that will be penalised and the courts will not display leniency for ignorance or busyness. 2.0 The Job description A job is a collection of tasks and responsibilities that an employee is responsible to conduct. Job descriptions are lists of the general tasks and responsibilities of a position. Typically, they also include to whom the position reports, specifications such as the key responsibilities and qualifications and experience needed by the person in the job and can sometimes includes the salary range for the position. Job descriptions are usually developed by conducting a job analysis, which includes examining the key tasks necessary to perform the job. The analysis looks at the areas of knowledge and skills needed by the job.A typical job description is used for advertising to attract an employee to fill a position, or to set the boundaries and parameters of the particular position that you want filled. However, many job descriptions are not framed well and this includes, not worded a job description in a manner such that the employee’s performance can be measured and leaving out key flexibility clauses. It is not uncommon for a person to write a position description, hire the employee and then have the employee refuse to do the banking because banking was not incorporated in their job description. In cases where the dispute has gone legal the employee has a good chance of winning. Its all in the documentation. When drafting a job description it is paramount to include a flexibility clause that will allow the employer the right to direct the employee to perform other work that is within their recognized skill set. 3.0 What should I include in job description Your job description is an important document that needs to set out a number of key matters. 3.1 Purpose of the position The purpose of the position summarises the key reason the position exists within the organisation and a short paraphrase of duties the incumbent is required to understand and take responsibility for. 3.2 Position reports to Having stated professional boundaries is an important part of the organisation and employees understanding in who they report to and what they are responsible for. This prevents any misunderstanding which in the event of dispute will work against you if you do not have it documented. 3.3 Key responsibilities This section of the job description details the main tasks that the employee is accountable and responsible for. It should include the macro items however some employers like to include the micro detail as well. Of paramount importance is point four of the example (you may be required to undertake a variety of tasks, both skilled and semi-skilled, or carry out some other task which is not specifically within your traditional role provided the task is within your core skill competencies and legal requirements). This gives you flexibility to direct your employee to undertake other work not detailed in their job description. We are now living in an age of discontinuous change where todays tasks change tomorrow and this gives you the flexibility to grow with those changes. 3.4 Core Skills Core skills are those skills and experience that the incumbent will need as a minimum to perform the job in a professional and responsible manner. As such, you need to take particular notice when interviewing a perspective employee in ensuring they really do have these attributes. Research has discovered that up to 35% of qualifications, memberships and experience written on a resumes are false. This includes Masters and PhD degrees. Before giving the position to someone reference check carefully. Recently we assisted an Accountant whose employee warranted they had the skills and passed probation and then after probation dropped the ball. If a perspective employee signs off to say they have these skills and afterwards displays the contrary you have common law and industrial rights that protect you. 3.5 Occupational Health and Safety Occupational health and safety is a big ticket item of the industrial agenda today. To many lives lost, over 500 lives lost each year to industrial accidents. Most job descriptions do not contain reference to the employer and employee working within the framework of health and safety and do so to their peril. By including this clause, by induction and training you are able to demonstrate your commitment to health ad safety. 3.6 Sign off Sign off demonstrates that the employee has the core skills, experience, and safety awareness to carry out key responsibilities. In the vent of a dispute this is critical. The Wonders of Compound Interest

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rosella_Aranda]Rosella Aranda Albert Einstein called compound interest the greatest invention of all time. It has even been referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The trick is to get this tremendous force working for you rather than against you. Is compound interest gobbling up a significant chunk of your earnings? If you maintain an ongoing balance with a credit card company, compound interest is costing you much more than you probably realize. Lets start with basic interest, which is a fee that you pay to a lender for the privilege of borrowing his money. This interest is attached to the original amount at an agreed upon rate. Compound interest is calculated on the balance owing plus any previous interest charges. So then you find yourself paying interest on the interest. This compounding effect continues until it virtually takes on a life of its own. Credit card lenders make a killing putting this principle to work for them. Allow me to illustrate. Lets say youre carrying a balance of $1,000 on a credit card with a 15% APR. If you pay only the minimum each month, you could conceivably gnaw away at this debt for over 25 years and end up repaying a total of over $3,400! If, on the other hand, you could commit yourself to paying $100 per month, this debt would be wiped out in less than a single year and the interest would come to a much less offensive $75. Now lets look at what would happen if you took $1,000 and put it to work for you instead of against you. Lets assume that you are able to keep your hands off this money and simply let it sit and earn 6% interest compounded annually. After 12 years, your money would have doubled without you adding one extra penny! You can quickly figure out in your head how long it will take for a sum of money to double by applying the Rule of 72. You simply take whatever interest rate youre earning (6% in this case) and divide it into 72. The result will be the number of years required to double your money. (72/6 = 12 in our example) You can apply the rule backwards as well. Lets say you have a lump sum of $5,000 that you would like to grow into $10,000 in 8 years. You would need to find an investment that pays 9% compound interest. (72/8 = 9). If the best you can find is an 8% return on your money (hypothetically speaking,) then it would take you 9 years to double your money. Not bad for just letting it sit there! Now lets assume that you want to help the growth rate along, so you add an extra hundred dollars to this account just once a year. At the end of the 12 years, you would now have $3,800. If you could discipline yourself enough to add $200 a year, then you would find yourself with almost $5600. Seeing your money grow like this might well entice you to invest more money each month and really reap the benefits of this wealth-generating principle. And theres more good news. These examples demonstrate what happens when your investment compounds annually. Some institutions are more generous, compounding your interest quarterly, monthly or even daily. Its pretty clear which end of the compound interest principle you want to be on. The first step toward the winners circle is to pay off your existing debts. Even if youre already having trouble making ends meet, a mere $1 addition to a minimum payment can significantly shorten the life of that loan. Thats right, just one dollar. You wont miss it and it would be well worth it. Remember the compounding effect. And once youre out of debt, theres no minimum for earning compound interest. Any sum that you can set aside will do. You dont need to be Donald Trump or Bill Gates in order to benefit from compound interest. It can work wonders for us all. Ephedra Product Ban

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Anna_Henningsgaard] Anna Henningsgaard Ephedra is a naturally occuring herbal dietary supplement that has been marketed as a weight loss drug. The principal active ingredient is an amphetamine-like compound. Because it has been marketed as an herbal supplement and not a drug, you may not have considered talking to your doctor about it, but if you have been using Ephedra or any dietary supplement containing ephedrine alkaloids, such as ephedra, ma huang, Sida cordifolia, and pinellia, stop immediately and consult a doctor! The FDA has advised consumers to stop using these dietary supplements and published a final ruling in 2004 to ban the sale of all supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids. After reviewing Ephedra, the Food and Drug Administration found that it has little positive effects beyond temporary short-term weight loss. To the contrary, Ephedra raises blood pressure and stresses the heart. Many people using Ephedra to lose weight have suffered strokes and died. Recent studies have confirmed that Ephedra use raises blood pressure and stresses the circulatory system. Furthermore, a study of calls to poison control centers revealed that a disproportionate rate of negative reactions were cased by Ephedra as opposed to other herbal products. If you are using ephedra or ma huang, discontinue use immediately. If you used ephedra in the past and are now experience symptoms of high blood pressure, intense headaches, or heart palpitations, contact a lawyer right away to discuss your case. Eucalyptus Oil for Colds and Flu

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Rudy Silva Recently I came down with a cold, flu, and some heavy chest congestion. My 8-year daughter also became sick. One of the Natural Remedies I used was Eucalyptus Oil, which helped to reduce the chest congestion and the symptoms of the flu. Herbalists use this oil to treat colds, coughs, and other respiratory ailments. Eucalyptus helps to loosen phlegm and improve lung function. The active ingredient in eucalyptus oil is cineol or euclyptol. The oil is a fine decongestant and has strong germicidal and antibacterial effects. Some other uses for Eucalyptus are skin problems, muscle, and nerve pain. It has been used as diuretic, and to lower blood sugar. Heres how I use this oil to help me when I have a cold with cough and chest congestion. Just before bedtime, I rub the oil on my chest and throat. Then I wrap a cloth around my neck to keep it warm and to help the eucalyptus to penetrate the skin. If you have EMU oil, you can add a drop or two of EMU to the eucalyptus oil to help it penetrate your skin faster and deeper. EMU oil has the property of penetrating the skin and moving deep into your tissues and to carry any other substances that are mix with it into the skin. I use plenty of eucalyptus oil in the rub, but some of you might react to it so just rub a little to see it you will be ok with it. If you use eucalyptus oil with other oils, it becomes less irritating. Eucalyptus oil can also be used in a steam inhalation to help with colds or flu.You can also mix eucalyptus with tea tree oil and massage your chest and back when you have the flu. You can also mix eucalyptus with thyme, rosemary and lemon and diffuse it into the room when you are sick with the flu or cold.Only use eucalyptus for the time need to clear you cold. Long-term use of this oil has an effect on the liver. Do not use eucalyptus oil on children under 6 years. Nutritionist. He is the author of Constipation, Acne, Hemorrhoid, and Fatty Acid ebooks. Alarm Clock

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Dewey Houston An alarm clock is simply what it sounds like, a clock with an alarm that we can set to remind us about various activities or to awaken us in the morning. The basic function of the alarm clock has not changed, yet the various additional features such as the type of alarm have continued to evolve around popular opinion and changing fads. There are analog alarm clocks and digital alarm clocks. Analog clocks are the ones with arms. Analog clocks can more accurately display the time. The third seconds hand can show exactly how much of a minute had passed, whereas a digital alarm clock only shows the nearest whole minute that has already passed. The most traditional alarm clock is analog, has three hands and one type of alarm bell. With this type of alarm clock, the alarm is usually turned on by pulling out the pin at the top of the alarm clock. This same pin is depressed in order to turn the alarm off once it has alerted you at the proper time. In these traditional and still popular analog alarm clocks, a spring drives a gear that propels a clacker back and forth between two the sides of a single bell or between two bells. In an electric bell alarm clock, the bell rings with an electromagnetic circuit and armature that turns the circuit off and on repeatedly. The basic digital alarm clock radio combination is the most popular type of alarm clocks used today. Generally, these will be digital alarm clocks that have analog tuning capabilities for AM / FM radio listening. Of course, the nice thing about these popular alarm clocks is that you can choose to be woken by the radio station of your choice instead of the annoying alarm raucous. Many people prefer to awaken to talk radio or soft music. A nice feature that all digital alarm clocks have in common is a sleep function, as well as a snooze feature. With snooze you can tell the alarm clock to go off again in a set amount of time, usually five or ten minutes. Sleep is a feature that allows you to listen to music while you go to sleep without leaving the radio running all night. Sleep will turn off in the amount of time specified by you. Over time there have been many innovations and nice features added on to the digital alarm clock radio. One feature I really enjoy is how my alarm will start off quiet and slowly rise to the full volume at which I set it. This is really nice and preferable to the sudden jolt of regular alarm clocks. There are alarm clocks that allow you to play your favorite CD, using with the alarm or the sleep feature. This is a great way to customize your alarm clock and waking up in the morning experiences. Many people prefer to use their cell phones as alarm clocks because they are able to hold several different reminders for several different events. This is certainly something that alarm clock manufacturers should have in mind when designing the alarm clocks to come. Dewey worked for a security company as an alarm technician for more than 5 years. He has experience with both the installation of alarm systems for homes or for automobiles. At http://www.fantomizer.com, he provides a free technical chart on the pros and cons and the most popular alarm systems that are available on the market such as retail alarm systems. The Mediterranean Diet - Lose Weight Without Sacrificing Taste!

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Michael Bens Theres a popular book out right now that explores the reasons why French women dont get fat. Its certainly not for lack of eating delicious food! The same might be said for the Mediterranean diet the traditional foods that are prepared and eaten around the Mediterranean region of Europe. The people there may not be model-skinny, but here are few if any seriously overweight people who live the traditional lifestyle and eat traditional Mediterranean foods. It all comes down to great tasting, natural food. Forget what you think you know about Italian cuisine, for a start yes, pizza and pasta do figure heavily in some regions of Italy, but not in the Mediterranean region. By the sea, people subsist on what they can catch from the sea and grow in their gardens. The result is natural, delicious food that is a pleasure to prepare and an even greater pleasure to eat. Of course, we all naturally think of tomatoes and its a fact that tomatoes grown in the Mediterranean sun are far superior to any that we might find elsewhere in the world. The Mediterranean basin is the home of the tomato, and the place where it grows best. But thats just the beginning. There are a variety of other vegetables that the Mediterranean kitchen abounds with, and many of them happen to be dark green, red or orange in color. Believe it or not, that does matter quite a bit, in fact. Studies have shown that dark green, red and orange vegetables have a higher concentration of anti-oxidants, making them powerful cancer fighters. Also, these tend to be more flavorful and satisfying than many other vegetables especially when prepared according to Mediterranean recipes and that means that you are more likely to fill up on vegetables. And that, of course, is one of the best things you can possibly do for maximum weight loss. Meat is part of the diet, but its served rather sparingly. Fish is much more common, given that the Mediterranean life is oriented around the sea. Fish are grilled, or prepared as part of various cooked dishes that also contain vegetables. Forget the batter-covered English style fish and chips, though Europeans living in the Mediterranean regions have much better things to do with their fish, with greatly superior results! Fish is often quite low in fat, as well as being an excellent source of protein. Even when the fat content is a little higher, however, dont worry fat that comes from fish is good fat, healthy for your heart and bones. Speaking of good fat, you cant get much better than olive oil for cooking, drizzling on salads, or as a condiment of sorts. Olive oil has none of the harmful effects that some oils have when they are heated its a good, clean oil that adds flavor, and if youre using good quality olive oil, a little goes a long way! Try to buy cold pressed extra virgin olive oil from Italy, Greece or Spain, or maybe from a lesser known olive oil producer such as Croatia or Albania. In all of these countries, olive groves that are sometimes up to a thousand years old continue to produce olives for eating and oil production. Olives and olive oil are as much a part of the culture as any other aspect of Mediterranean cuisine. As you can see, the Mediterranean diet is not necessarily a low calorie one, though it certainly can be you can adjust the calorie content without sacrificing taste, because natural ingredients make up so much of the diet. If you are interested in eating healthily but not necessarily in losing weight, you can add in some of the extras red wine, some cheese and home baked bread, or the occasional dessert. Even without those extras, though, the Mediterranean diet is easy to follow and stick to because it simply tastes great. Assuming that you are not living in a Mediterranean country (in which case you would probably be eating like this already), find a quality source of tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables in your community. Try to find Greek or Italian grocery store, too, for more obscure ingredients. The Mediterranean diet is good eating for life, as well as being relatively easy and fun to follow. Lose That Ugly Algae!

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Brett Fogle Too much organic material in your pond or water garden puts algae into overdrive by providing nutrients that cause it to grow. Besides obscuring the beauty of your vividly colored fish, algae rob oxygen from the water and emit noxious contaminants that can kill them. Ultraviolet (UV) clarifiers work by employing that part of the light spectrum to rid algae of its ability to reproduce. Once destroyed, the microscopically tiny algae form into larger clusters that are easily eliminated by common filtration systems. Sun-blocking plants and those that provide abundant supplies of oxygen present another easy answer to maintaining a clear water environment for your pond. Floaters like water lilies, lotus, water hawthorn, four-leaf water clover, and yellow floating heart reduce sunlight by substantially shading the water surface and thereby impeding algal growth. Water hyacinths have become a recent rage, especially for the lazy among us. No soil is required for these beauties. Toss them in the water and theyre planted. A water hyacinth isn’t just another pretty face, though; these plants do their part in the war against algae and blanket weeds by keeping sunlight scarce on the waters surface. But one note of caution: This plant may take over the world if allowed. Its invasive as all get out, so keep it under control or you (and your neighbors) may wish youd never laid eyes on it. Submerged plants, such as Cabomba, Anacharis, and Jungle Vall, not only produce oxygen for use by both plants and fish, but also absorb nitrogen from decaying plant matter and fish waste that would otherwise be used by algae to proliferate. ************************* Brett Fogle is the owner of MacArthur Water Gardens and several other pond-related websites including www.MacArthurWatergardens.com and www.Pond-Filters-Online.com He also publishes a free monthly newsletter called PondStuff! with a reader circulation of over 9,000. What! Not Another Celebrity Breakup!

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Jeff Herring Have you heard the earth shattering news? Have you heard that Jessica and Nick have broken up? Or as the press release stated, they have “parted ways.” It’s true. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey announced that they have decided to go their separate ways. Now, please forgive my cynicism here. It’s just that when stuff like this is treated like news, even surprising news, well, I think it is just silly. At the same time, I do not mean to make fun of their pain. Break ups hurt, and I wish them both a speedy recovery. Sustainable relationships These are two very attractive people. Physical attraction in a relationship is a wonderful thing. It’s just that it’s hard to sustain a long term relationship based on physical attraction alone. A sustainable relationship requires a good match between the requirements, needs and wants of two people. Requirements are what I call “gotta-haves.” The relationship will not work if a requirement is not met. There is no room for compromise. Ex: Having children is a good example of a requirement. It’s an either/or situation, because you cannot have half a child. Needs are almost as important as requirements in a relationship. The difference is needs can be negotiated. Needs need to be met, because each time a need is not met, an issue is created. At the same time, there is some flexibility in how the needs are met. Ex: If one person has a stronger need for alone time, this can be negotiated. When, where, and how often the need for alone time is met can be negotiated and compromised upon. Wants are the gravy in a relationship, the extra good stuff. Wants do not have to be there, it’s just a lot more fun if they are. Ex: For instance, I really like smooth jazz music. While it would be nice if the person I am with likes smooth jazz too, it’s not a have too or a deal breaker.
